You receive two quotes. One reads EXW $3.20 per unit. The other reads DDP $5.80 per unit. Which one is the better deal? Most buyers pick the wrong one.

EXW means the factory's job ends the moment your goods leave the factory gate.2 Everything after that is your cost — domestic trucking, export documentation, international shipping, insurance, import duties, and final delivery to your warehouse. DDP means the supplier manages all of that and delivers to your door.3 The price looks higher on paper, but it covers far more.

The real difference between EXW and DDP is not just price. It is who carries the risk and who manages the process at each step of the journey.

EXW gives you full control. You can choose your own freight forwarder, negotiate shipping rates, and pick your customs broker. This works well if you already have a logistics setup and you move volume regularly. If you do not, EXW can get complicated and expensive fast.

DDP is simple. One price, one point of contact. But suppliers who offer DDP are not doing it for free. They build a margin into the logistics cost, and they also carry risk, which they price for. I have seen DDP quotes that looked expensive at first but turned out cheaper than a badly managed EXW shipment once all the pieces were added up.

FOB sits between the two. The supplier handles the export side, and you take over once the goods are loaded onto the vessel. FOB is the most common trade term I work with for ocean shipments.4 It gives buyers a clear handover point and works well when you already have a trusted freight forwarder on your side.

The right choice depends on your logistics experience, your order volume, and how much control you want over the process. There is no single right answer, but knowing what each term actually means makes the choice a lot easier.


What Is Included in Landed Costs?

A lot of buyers treat the FOB price as the real cost. They build their retail price around it, set their margins, and then wonder why the numbers do not work at the end of the quarter. FOB is not your landed cost. Not even close.

Landed cost is the total amount you spend to get one unit of product into your warehouse and ready to sell.5 It starts at the factory and ends at your shelf. Every cost in between counts.

Tariffs are often the biggest surprise. For stainless steel water bottles imported into the United States from China, the current duty rate can sit between 10% and 25% depending on the product classification and any active trade measures in place6. A product entering Canada from China faces a different rate structure. If you are importing from Vietnam, India, or another country, the rates shift again. Getting the correct HS code for your product before you calculate duties is not optional.7 It is the first step.

I always build a landed cost model before I confirm any order. I take the FOB unit price, add each line above as a separate row, and get a per-unit landed cost. A standard double-wall vacuum insulated stainless steel water bottle has a factory cost that typically falls between $2.00 and $8.00 per unit.8 That range is wide because the specs, materials, and order volume all move the number significantly.

What Drives the Manufacturing Cost Up or Down?

The vacuum insulation process is where the thermal performance comes from. A proper vacuum seal between the inner and outer walls keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12. Lid design is the second biggest variable after material. A simple screw-top lid costs very little. A leak-proof lid with a locking mechanism, a carry loop, and a silicone seal costs noticeably more. If you are sourcing bottles for an active outdoor market, the lid is often where the real quality difference lives.

Order volume changes all of these numbers. A factory producing 500 units for you runs very different economics than one producing 50,000. At 500 units, setup costs, tooling amortization, and small-batch inefficiency all push the per-unit price up. At 50,000 units, you get bulk raw material pricing, better machine utilization, and more room to negotiate on finish and packaging.
