Most buyers assume any cup with a lid is leak-proof. Then the complaints come in, and the refunds follow. This is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes I see.

The sippy cups that do not leak use multi-component valve systems. These systems pair a silicone membrane with a precise slit or cross-cut pattern. How Does the Valve Design Actually Work?
